Improve Marriage – How To (Ways To) Improve Your Marriage

A marriage is always evolving depending on which stage you and your couple are in. You could be in:

1. The honeymoon stage: Everything is rosy after the adrenaline of the marriage ceremony.

2. The waking-up-to-reality stage: You realise that marriage involves so much negotiation on practical issues such as buying your matrimonial home, managing your finances and dealing with your in-laws.

3. The stable stage: You may have settled into a comfortable routine, but then start getting bored of your spouse as the novelty of marriage wears off.

4. The building-a-family stage: The birth of children makes everything more complicated, and the relationship with your spouse may become neglected as a result.

In whatever stage of marriage you and your spouse may be in, marriage communication is key.

(A) Don’t over-react

Disagreements are inevitable in a marriage. However harsh the fallout may be from a quarrel, you and your spouse should always attempt to resolve your conflict within the day. That prevents lingering feelings of discontent and unhappiness to be carried over and bottled up. To achieve this, learn to compromise and negotiate to reach a middle ground.

(B) Use non-verbal communication

You should show your affection for your spouse by making eye contact when speaking or giving hugs everyday. This is important as it conveys trust and empathy. Particularly after a stressful day at work, it’s comforting to have your spouse show physical affection for you.

(C) Practice active listening

To actively listen, take time to listen to your spouse patiently. Rather than being judgmental, allow your spouse to finish his or her point before offering advice or asking questions. Do try to understand your spouse’s perspective and emotions, and avoid sarcasm or making fun of your spouse. This will show your empathy and understanding towards your spouse.

Maintaining a healthy marriage is tough, but ultimately, the level of satisfaction derived from your marriage should be more or less equivalent to the amount of effort you put into maintaining it. After all, your decision to marry should have been founded on the desire to further your relationship with your significant other.
