The Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) was founded in 1985 with a vision of having true gender equality in society, where women and men are equally valued as individuals free to make responsible decisions with regards to their individual lives. They aim to remove gender-based barriers through research and advocacy, education and training and through support services.

AWARE is a non-profit organisation and is funded through donations, grants and member subscriptions. AWARE has a Training Institute (ATI), which aims to empower women through training and developing women to attain independence. The institute also further provides educational curriculums to other organisations and the wider public on issues affecting women.

With Catalyse Consulting being the main corporate training division in AWARE, they provide corporate training, school workshops and talks/workshops. Catalyse aims to create a diverse and inclusive workplace to allow for individuals to maximise their full potentials. They focus on providing workshops on workplace harassment and unconscious bias and cultural diversity.

AWARE also provides support services which aids in providing crisis counselling and assistance with legal advice to women. The AWARE hotline is open Monday to Fridays, from 3pm to 9.30pm and is supported by experienced counsellors and trained volunteers. Aside from the hotline, support services include the Befrienders programme, Counselling, a legal clinic and a Sexual Assault Care Centre.

The Befrienders programme is aimed at women facing difficult times who may be unable to attain sufficient support from family and friends. A Befriender will follow women who need to attend hospital appointment, court hearings or speak to the police, and this scheme supports women who have faced gender-based violence. AWARE’S free legal clinic is open on the second and fourth Thursday of every month and you are required to make an appointment by calling the helpline. Counselling services are also available and can assist women in various topics ranging from sexual harassment and assault to adjustment and relocation issues.

AWARE offers opportunities to become an intern, volunteer and member with them. They also host an information page, which covers topics such as contraception, abortion and rape.
