Abusive Spouse – Dealing with An Abusive Spouse

Domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence or women- it can affect men and be damaging to the mind too.

1. Dealing with an Abusive Spouse

Nonetheless, women like Rachel Chung are the most common victims of domestic abuse. She was verbally abused by her husband due to the weight she put on after the birth of her first child. This then escalated into slapping, kicking and punching that occurred every time she disagreed with her husband. Rachel initially stayed with her husband as she was intent on giving her kids a “complete” family. She then finally filed for divorce after eight years when her eldest child witnessed the abuse.

Even after leaving their abusers, victims will still be affected by the lingering effects of domestic abuse. Objects as mundane as a broom can act as a trigger so as to inflict victims with flashbacks to unpleasant memories of being abused by someone they trusted. Unsurprisingly, victims of domestic abuse may develop post-traumatic stress disorder due to having lived with feelings of heightened fear and vulnerability over a prolonged period.

2. Leaving an Abusive Spouse

Such divorcees require even more care as they recover from their traumatic experience. To help such victims of domestic abuse, you can:

A. Remind the divorcee that the aggressor was responsible for his or her actions, and that it is not her or her fault that he or she wanted to get out of that toxic relationship.

B. Remind the divorcee that it is possible to heal from the effects of domestic violence as hurt and negative emotions will fade with time

C. Facilitate the recovery process for the divorcee by providing a harmonious environment and a support group.

D. Encourage the divorcee to see a professional counsellor to sort out his or her feelings, so as to feel empowered again.
